But see, you’re entitled to that. I agree that while it is progress, more gender-neutral restrooms would be better as well. Seeing as how that happens very rarely unless places have all of one restroom, we will have to take this for now, while pushing for further change. You’re doing it right Chicago.
I don’t get why this is any different than it saying men’s room and women’s room.
it’s not really, and it fucks over genderqueer people who don’t fit in either. i like gender neutral bathrooms…
My thoughts exactly. On a day where I am agender, I wouldn’t technically fit either. I just wish there were more gender neutral ones.
I fucking hate this. Trans* “allies” just LOVE to distinguish between “male/female” and “male/female identified.” Anyone who thinks this is more inclusive is third gendering trans women and men while completely erasing non-binary people.
I am a man and therefore am included in the “men’s room.” Changing the sign only pisses me off, it doesn’t make it any safer. The culture of transphobia and violence in gendered spaces such as restrooms needs to end, and gender neutral single-stalls need to be more available.

My very, very favorite restroom signs were the ones that said “Restrooms Equipped with Urinals [this way]” and “Restrooms Equipped with Sanitary Bins [this way]”.
Best, imo.
It’s step in the right direction imo D: they’re TRYING at least…
Everyone loves to flip a shit when things aren’t good enough. Maybe the reason they can’t make a bigger, all-inclusive step is cuz politics and terrible people make that impossible! Is this not a sign of progress? Ugh I shouldn’t rant like this oh well
I don’t see what the big deal is with having man/woman washrooms or why we need gender neutral washrooms. And I feel bad for thinking this because it seems like I’m the only one. Maybe I’m just misunderstanding here, because for one-person washrooms I totally agree it’s stupid to label it men’s/women’s. Have two washrooms and if two people of the same sex both need to go at the same time then it makes no sense for them not to. But when it comes to public washrooms I guess I think men’s/women’s distinction has nothing to do with “get your filthy/unworthy opposite-sexness away from MY facilities”, or any rigid form of exclusion like that, but is just a courtesy for people who want a little more privacy. I imagine if I myself were gender-queer (kind of wish I were at the moment so I wouldn’t feel so unentitled to an opinion) I would pick the washroom that I thought would lend the most courtesy to people in general. For example, a girl who might feel extremely uncomfortable about a guy hearing her pooping noises. Something that is pretty common in our society if I might guess. But I’m ready for a bunch of people saying that would be sexist of her or something. Would they? Are people going to complain that they aren’t “priviledged” enough to listen to females poop? Would they presume to tell her to get over her insecurities about it? Sorry if I offended anybody. If I did, please engage in dialogue with me before hating me.
I’ve always seen the bathrooms thing as a matter of separating genders that are attracted to eachother so there are no “mishaps” in the public bathrooms, like, uh, sexual harassment (and worse). Besides that and general privacy, I haven’t been able to think of any other reasons for separating bathrooms by identity or sex or anything, and I really don’t understand the point of a gender-neutral bathroom either.
Really, the only reason I like the above pictures is because it shows some form of open-mindedness developing in society…
But, being comfortable with my anatomical sex, I suppose I can’t imagine how this is for someone who is different.
I can never decide if there’s even an issue here or if people are just bitter that society doesn’t know what gender identity is.
(P.S., I mean to present my opinions in a “here’s what I think, please contribute” manner. I say this because I can’t tell if my text sounds hostile.)
“I can never decide if there’s even an issue here or if people are just bitter that society doesn’t know what gender identity is.” I like this sentence.
